I have gone through and added up what we have been spending on this house. And...it's time for some no spends.
It's been fun since J got home and being 'homeowners' but now it's time to get back to reality and start saving again.
We're ahead on the mortgage, so that's good news. We're in the process of 'updating' our house with a few new upgrades.
We are putting a storm door on the front of the house. I like opening our front door and not having my two cats run outside.
We are also going to be repainting the front door. Whoever painted the door last time did a horrible job. They didn't remove the door hardware and some of the door hardware...like the door handle and lock are broken. You can still lock the door, but the handle itself is bent and pulling out from the door.
We have all of the paint and replacement hardware ready to go, we're just waiting on the installation of the stormdoor to be completed.
Besides that, this Thursday I have a doctor's appointment down at the University of Virginia for my achilles tendons. I took the entired day as a scheduled sick day as the appointment is at 8am and it's about 1hr30mins from where we live. J also took the day off so he could take me. I'll probably be asleep the entire drive down as I work until 12:30am.
I hope that I can get the surgery done quickly on the left foot and deal with the right later on.
Work, well it's work. I had a 3 day weekend so my parents could come down. We had a good time and even had a fire in our firepit in the backyard on Saturday night. That was nice :)
Now I have to return to work. At least it will be short because of the sick day. 3 days on, 1 off, 1 on, 1 off, 1 on, 1 off, 4 on. LOL This is what my schedule is the next 2 weeks.
Anyway! Work starts in an hour. Hopefully this week will be a little less painful on the pocketbook!
Have a great week all! :)
Our Journey to becoming less haunted by debt. There will be good times, and I'm sure bad, but in the end we hope to bring our debt down and manage our financial lives responsibly.

End of the Work Week
So some exciting news, I am going to be putting an offer in on a house. It's perfect, and even though we were going to wait for J to come home from Afghanistan before finding a house, this one is too good to pass up. J has given me the job of doing this.
It's really overwhelming. I know this house is just right, but it's a lot of money and responsibility to have our own house. I'm just nervous at doing this for the first time, and essentially on my own.
Our credit scores have also improved again. So while this really doesn't have an affect on the VA loan we qualify for, it's a nice accomplishment for both of us.
So today will be my 11th no spend day. Still on track to meet 15.
And yesterday I went to the county fair with a group from my Tae Kwon Do school.
I also will receive my Bo Dan Belt (1 below black belt) which basically means I am 1st Dan eligible now.
Big accomplishment for me since I have so many injuries that cause a lot of pain, even just to train.
I hope this last work day goes by quickly, and I can have this weekend to just relax (except for that whole off thing! haha) Wish me luck!

Another Payday Another Paydown
Today is J's payday. It's funny, with me being on vacation, the last payday occurred when I was on my way up to Canada. It doesn't seem that long ago, but here we are, another two weeks have passed!
Today, I have made payments to J's Navy Federal Visa and Mastercard for $1000 each, and to my Navy Federal Visa and Mastercard for $500 each. For a total of $3000 paid down. It won't be long before these are long gone too!
I was going to make higher payments, but I'm waiting to see if there is something that I have forgotten. I guess because I wasn't spending the money in the account when I was in Canada I ended up having more in there than I normally would (groceries, gas, etc).
I will most likely make a deposit to my Canadian credit cards to pay what I used while I was up there. One benefit of having my Canadian CCs...I don't have to pay the conversion rate when I use them!
Tomorrow will be my pay day, but so far all that I need to pay from it is my MBNA CC which depending on the conversion rate from the bank, should be $950.
On the Credit Score update, my Equifax score changed when I was in Canada from 668 to 684! I beat J lol. Although when our reports update with the changes in utilization to his Navy Federal CCs (should be $5000 difference between the two) his Equifax will probably skyrocket....well that's what I'm hoping anyway :)
Tuesday and Wednesday were No Spends for me, today and tomorrow will be another. It's pretty bad that when I was on vacation I only had 3 No Spends out of the 12 days I was up there. That's ok, still have half of the month to make my goal of 15 or else Rafiki over at Upendilife will definitely let me have it! :)
Hope your week has been good, cannot wait for the weekend!

I'm Back and a Few Fun Things
I'm back from the cottage and I definitely needed to get away. There were some fun, interesting and memorable moments, and some not so fun ones.
We saw a bear (the first one I'd ever seen in the wild), but then later that day someone shot and killed it :( That was on Thursday evening, so the rest of our trip was a little soured.
We had campfires, cottage coffee (coffee with baileys, grand marnier and whipped cream, yum!), fishing, walking through the woods, and bbq'd every night.
The one good thing about being up in Canada, my bank accounts in the US didn't even get touched for over a week! I had taken $300 in cash to spend up here (so I consider that my spend day for it, since it was all budgeted out) I use any credit purchases (which I only use up here because I can't use my debit card) and money from my US account as spend days. I'll have to review my receipts to see where I am regarding that goal.
We came home yesterday, and man, did I have a lot of reading and catching up to do on my favourite blogs!
Mysti over at Digging Our From Our Mess is having her first giveaway for 2 years of blogging! There are 4 ways to enter for the $50 giftcard at Novica.com, but you better hurry you only have until August 8 at 7pm EDT to enter!
And at So Over Debt she is also having a giveaway for her 100th post! There are many ways to enter and it closes Friday August 12 but you could win a $25 e-card of your choice!
Hope you all have a great Sunday!

Mid Week Update
This week has been interesting. I signed up for some overtime at work this week. I was going to do 4 days of 2 extra hours each for 8 total overtime hours. I cancelled today's OT though. Yesterday I went to Westminster, MD to spend some time with a friend who owns a vehicle restoration business. I got to help take out an engine, and see how to do some body work on a WWII Jeep.
If you don't know already, J and I do WWII reenacting. It's how we met actually and it's kind of our passion. Eventually we will have a WWII Jeep and learning how to fix and restore them is a great thing to have so that you don't have to pay someone to do it. Although, having a friend who owns his own business and would give me a good deal is always nice too haha.
Not much in the payoff department just yet. It all seems to happen when payday happens. Mostly I've been waiting for our credit reports to update. I had to actually call US Bank when they hadn't updated our equifax credit report showing a $0 balance. It hadn't updated since 05/2011 and it was paid off 06/16/2011. When I called, the representative was really rude, but I got her to update the reports, and as of yesterday, it is now showing $0 :)
Before, I had mentioned that my credit score had not updated when I thought it should. Well...turns out, the 658 score, is still the 658 score. I bit the bullet and paid for another report. Oh well, I'm hoping that with the updates here in the next couple of days when my Discover and USAA will show a $0 balance, or a $2500 reduction in debt will help and push that score up :)
J's score on the other hand. That's a different story. His score was 634 when we started on 05/20/2011. It then went to 641 on 06/13/2011 to 653 on 07/08/2011 to 672! on 07/18/2011! His score is better than mine! That's never happened. Oh, now it's on! lol If you knew me, you know how competitive I am lol.
I'm happy though too. He's never had a score that high. I'm hoping when all is said and done we will both be over 700. That's the goal anyway.
I did some number crunching the other day, and have reevaluated our payoff date. Before it was the 09/22/2011 paycheck that would have all of the credit card debt paid off. Now it will be one paycheck earlier, which is 09/08/2011.
I can't wait until then, and I can't wait until J comes home from his deployment in Afghanistan, 93 days. Not that I'm counting down or anything ;)
On the home searching front, I really really love the first house I looked at. But I don't feel it's right to make that decision on my own. So, I may end up sacrificing the home so that J and I can do this together. Plus, I'm going home to Canada here soon, so I don't want to be making any decisions and then not be able to get in contact with my realtor if something should come up.
I believe it will all work out in the end.
I've only had 1 No Spend day this week, which brings me to 9. The rest of this week should be no spends (today and tomorrow) which will make the total 11, only 1 away from my goal :)
Hope you all have been having a great week.

Paydays!
Yesterday and today were paydays for J and I.
We have now paid off another 3 Credit Cards!!
Walmart Discover $503 Paid in Full
Discover $511 Paid in Full
USAA $812 Paid in Full
We were also able to pay down the Navy Federal credit cards. So in total we were able to pay $3450 in credit card debt today :)
I only had 1 spend so far this week, but today should be another which will make 8 no spend days for the month.
Tomorrow, my realtor and I will be looking at homes. I went to look at one yesterday and it's PERFECT for J and I....but it's more than our budget (although the loan officer I talked to stated that we technically could afford it) and I want to compare other properties.
Hope you all have a great weekend!

Weekend Update
9 days into July and I have 6 No Spend Days! Half way to my goal already! I am so going to demolish this one :)
J and I signed up for Equifax Score Watch a couple of months ago, since we are looking to buy a home here soon, and I don't want to apply for anything until we have an idea of what our credit scores will be. Better scores mean a better interest rate.
When we started Score Watch (which we get a discount through Navy Federal) J's score was 634 and mine was 658. Not great.
We have paid off $10500 in credit card debt, but it is not all showing up on the report just yet. My score hasn't updated at all. This has to be a glitch with the program, because J's score has gone up to 653! I've emailed equifax to see what is going on. I'm curious to see what my real score is.
Hope you are all having a great weekend! I'm off to the Manassas Battlefield tomorrow :)

Good Start to July
This month is turning out to be pretty good so far! I know, I know, we're only 5 days in, but in 5 days I will have 4 no spend days!
I thought it was going to be a rough start, on Saturday I somehow pulled my back and both of my knees were really sore. After so many years of injuries, I'm about done with pain, so it was a bit depressing this weekend. But, on the bright side, that's why I have a good start on the no spends haha. Have to find a positive somewhere :)
Back to work tonight, off tomorrow and then work Thursday and Friday. I have this whole weekend off, so I am going to spend Sunday at the Manassas Battlefield with a good friend of mine whom I haven't seen in a couple of years. Should be a good day, weather is looking ok (hope it stays that way).
All the bills have been paid, now it's just a matter of keeping busy (without spending too much) and waiting for the next pay day and pay offs :)
Hope you all had a great 4th of July!

No Spend Update
I made my goal yesterday! 10 for the month, and today should be another. I will definitely have to spend on Thursday. Need to fill my prescription and I need to pick up a few other items. I've decided to save money, I'm going to see about rearranging the storage shed we have, so that I don't have to get a storage unit. I'd rather have my items near me anyway.
J just laughed at me when I told him. So now I have motivation to do it! I need to get more storage boxes so that moisture, and bugs can't get in. The containers we have now work good, but they don't really stack well, which has actually caused a couple of tumbles. The boxes I have bought stack really well, and I should be able to get quite a bit of our stuff packed away. Plus, with us looking to move, it's a good opportunity to start organizing and purging some of the things we don't need. Maybe a yard sale is in the future!
Pay day is tomorrow and Friday! Monthly debt and goal updates to follow :)

Another Bank Bought
So last week it was ING Direct USA who was bought out by Capital One. This week my cross border bank, RBC Bank was bought by PNC. I use RBC Bank because they were the US division of my Canadian bank, RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). I am able to transfer between the two with no problem, don't have to pay any fees, and it's there instantly.
Great....now what was I to do! I still have my Canadian credit cards that I am paying on, which makes it very convenient for me to do so.
Thankfully, nothing is going to change regarding cross border banking. For now. Hopefully I will have paid off the cards before anything does.
I'm up to 6 no spend days, today should be another, so I should make my goal of the 10, perhaps more! The weight loss goal....uh, yeah, so how's the weather where you are? :P
Thank goodness the weekend is almost here. I really need to find a storage place close by this weekend. We have too much STUFF here, and it needs to be moved until we buy a house and can actually display it all (mostly re-enacting gear)
What are your plans for the weekend?

The Week That Will Be
I had a pretty good weekend. Normally when J is home we would have gone out somewhere, whether it would be shopping, going to antique shops/flea markets, eating out, etc. Needless to say, when he's home, I/we spend.
On Saturday, I did a tae kwon do class (TKD) and was promoted to my dark brown belt. I came home and did some budgeting. It was a No Spend day for me, which is 4 for the month. Not where I wanted to be this far into June but I'll take it. I'm only 6 away from my goal.
Sunday I definitely needed to get some groceries. I hadn't grocery shopped in a couple of weeks and had been living off of what was available, which is good since I pretty much cleaned out my freezer!
Today, I need to get food for my two cats. When I shop for them it lasts at least a month, so they are due. I'm down to my last can of wet food for them.
Tuesday - TKD class at noon and work, so it should be a no spend, same thing for Thursday.
Wednesday and Friday will just be work days. I may see if there is any available OT for those days, just to pick up some hours.
This weekend, I may head out to a friends place in Maryland. He restores vintage vehicles, including WWII jeeps. I will own one of them one day. He is moving his jeep from a CJ2 frame to a new one and it's a good opportunity to see the inner workings of one.
This week I hope will fly by like last week. Not being on the phone all day definitely has reduced my stress level and I feel happier at work. Plus the folks on my new team are really fun.
Hope you all have a great week!

Lazy Days
I really wish the title of this post was Really Productive Days! But, alas it has not been as productive as I had hoped it would be. My parents will be coming to visit in a few weeks, and I would like to have my place looking somewhat decent. Not to mention, that when I gave our June rent check yesterday I was told that they are looking at refinancing since rates are so low. So, that will mean an assessment. Just to give me a heads up. *sigh* I hate cleaning, and we have so much stuff that this place is bursting.
I'm going to have to look into getting offsite storage for the things that we don't really need to keep here.
On a good note, today was another no spend day, so that's 6 for the month. Only 4 more to go meet my goal.
Tomorrow on the other hand, will be a spend day. Need to go and get J some socks. And we're not talking about your run of the mill Walmart Hanes socks. He needs these 1-pair $14 socks. I married a diva. I'll get them because I know they make him comfortable when wearing uncomfortable military style boots all day.
So, another Saturday has come and gone. I have a cat lazily dreaming beside me, watching NASCAR and wishing that we could get all of our credit cards paid off so that J can come home.
Tory is the Grey cat beside me right now

Pay Raise!
So I arrived at work today and found in my email an offer letter for the position that I was offered last week.
I totally wasn't expecting the offer letter because it normally works that you go to training, you 'graduate', you get out on the floor and then in about 30-45 days you get your pay raise.
I guess, now that I have moved into a more 'management' or 'responsible' position, my raise is effective 05/29! I'm not supposed to go into training until 06/06 :)
The raise isn't bad either. While I'm at the minimum for the GL that I'm at, it's still at $6100/year raise to my salary. That's over $500 more a month!
So happy about that. Even though J is over in Afghanistan and will be paying off most of our debt, it will be nice to be able to contribute to it as well as add to our savings.
So I've decided that I'm going to pay off 3 - 4 CCs next payday.
Pretty sure of the first two that will be paid, not sure of the third or fourth. We do have a couple of 'bills' to pay, including our County property taxes for our cars.
Going to pay the Car and Renters Insurance in full.
There's so much I want to do! It's pretty exciting! I'm not quite used to all of this. Especially having money in our checking accounts knowing that I've paid all of the bills on time.
Also, I had 3 No Spend days this week! Plus 1 last week. So my goal for this month was 10, and I've already had 4. I'm pretty pleased with myself so far.
Well, J is probably going to call me here soon :) Can't wait to hear his voice again.

Tonight we are celebrating our anniversary early. Since hubby will be gone for training during our real anniversary, we'll go out for dinner tonight.
Plus, we need to get him some essentials for his deployment.
We got our federal tax refund yesterday of $2123. $1300 of it has already been set aside to pay for a project we've been doing for a year now. We'll finally be able to pay it all off.
That leaves us with $800. That's been moved to a checking account that isn't being used right now, so that we don't just spend it. It will pay for those few things that hubby needs, plus some debt.
Next week, is payday for both J and I. The week after I should be getting my bonus from work. I've figured it should be about $750. The last week of February will also be another pay day for both of us.
The bonus money will also go towards paying debt. I have a Firestone account that is due by March that I don't want to pay the deferred interest on! That will get paid off.
Well, off to spend the day with J, and enjoy our early anniversary :)

No Spend Week No More
Woke up this morning with a sore throat and hacking cough. I was going to go to the clinic before going to work, but I felt so bad that I didn't leave myself enough time to go to the clinic and get to work on time.
Luckily, Wednesday is when the nurse is supposed to be there. I went a little before my shift was supposed to start, and the nurse sent me home right away. Running a fever, and with my other symptoms she didn't want me to infect anyone there. So off I went to the clinic, with a prognosis of Bronchitis.
Co-Pay $25
Prescription $10
Time off of work, not good. I work where we are considered "essential personnel" and they don't like if you take unscheduled leave. I HAVE to go back tomorrow, or face being reprimanded, even though I am still running a fever and feel horrible. Not only is my chest hurt, but I'm on a Z-Pack which makes my stomache muscles cramp so bad.
So yay. Plus, we've got a snowstorm going on right now (not that I mind, but when you feel like death warmed over, snow not so fun).
